LIVING FOR THE MOMENT

Terry McDermott Trinity Mirror Sport Media 2017

Local lad Terry Mac realised a
dream when he was handed a
debut for boyhood favourites
Liverpool. Even better, that first
game came against Everton.
In his autobiography published
last year he recalls: “No-one
pulled me to one side to tell me.
Bob Paisley read out the team
like he always did and I was in it.
It was an incredible feeling.”
That 1974 game ended goalless
but Terry went on to play 13
times against the Toffees,
scoring once – in the 1977 FA
Cup semi-final at Maine Road

which ended in a 2-2 draw – and
also becoming the first Liverpool
player to be sent off in a derby in
the last century, in October 1979.
“There was a big melee after
my mate Garry Stanley had gone
through [Reds striker] David
Johnson. I ended up hitting Garry
in the mouth – I still think I’ve
got the indentation of one of his
teeth on my knuckle. We were
both dismissed but it didn’t alter
our friendship and as we were
going down the tunnel, we were
arranging where to hook up later
for a good night out!”

  1. Anfield big screen
When Blues hosted Reds in an
FA Cup fifth-round tie in March
1967, it was the first cup derby
in 12 years, and to meet demand
    the Goodison Park clash was
also shown on four giant screens
    at Anfield.
    In total there were 64,851
    spectators at Goodison and
    another 40,149 here. The Anfield
screens had to be reinforced due
to high winds and the Liverpool
Echo reported: “Set up in a

square in the middle of the pitch
they were hardly sophisticated.
Indeed they actually looked like
giant white sheets, stretched
and pinned against a huge
scaffolding.” The reception
was good “although the wind
inevitably caused a certain
amount of wobbling.”
The loudest applause was
reserved for an incident when
two pitch-invaders at Goodison
were removed by policemen.
Everton won the tie 1-0.
