Gates and
Branson back
lab-grown meat
US company Memphis Meats has successfully created
beef, chicken and duck using extracted animal cells in a
laboratory. Believing that the 90% reduction in land,
greenhouse gas emissions and water involved in
traditional farming, coupled with the need to feed a
growing population, makes this the ‘lab-riculture’ of the
future. It’s an opinion shared by Richard Branson and
Bill Gates, who have both invested in the start-up.

MILLION
The amount paid for Paul Newman’s
Daytona Rolex in October last year,
making it the most expensive watch ever
bought at auction.
Bob Nease, Harper Collins
The ‘fifty bits’ referred to in the title
is the amount of information (from
10 million) that our brain processes
each second that actually relates
to conscious thought. In this
book, the author suggests that
understanding this is key to
behavioural change, either in
influencing others or making
better choices for ourselves.

EINSTEIN
Money buys happiness
In 1922, Einstein had just learned he had been awarded
the prestigious Nobel prize for physics. Penniless, but
sensing he was about to become very famous, instead
of giving a courier a tip, Einstein reached for a notepad
and wrote his secret to happiness. Believing they would
one day be worth something, the courier held onto
the notes that sold at auction in Jerusalem last year
for US$1.56 million and US$240,000. The secret?
“A calm and humble life will bring more happiness than
the pursuit of success and the constant restlessness
that comes with it.” The other note read, “Where
there’s a will, there’s a way.” Genius.
