n Fashion designer and lifelong vegetarian Stella
McCartney has never used leather, skins, fur,
or feathers in her products. She also uses
sustainable materials in around half of every
collection. Now she’s taking things a step
further with a collaboration with start-up
Bolt Threads. Upon learning that fabrics
such as polyester release micro particles
of plastic into the ocean with every load
of washing, McCartney has created
a product called Microsilk, which is
bioengineered to mimic the chemistry
and strength of natural silk created
by spiders. The goal? Nothing less
than changing the mindset of fashion
houses globally towards sustainability
and responsibility. “A shift like this,”
she tells Fast Company, “it’s massive.
The reality is that if Bolt Threads and
other companies like it can replace silk
or wool or cotton, we have a planet.”

By 2025, the estimated global AI

market is expected to be worth

US$2.4 trillion
