strengthtostrength,findsAmyDavies

verthepastyear-and-
a-bit,theSheClicks
Facebookgroup,setup
byformerAPTechnical
EditorAngelaNicholson,hasgrown
enormously.Fromitsbeginnings
withjusta handfulofmembers,
atthetimeofwriting,almost
5,000womenhavejoinedtogether
todiscuss,celebrateandshare
theirphotography.
Withsomanyactivemembers,
Angelawantedtosetupan
exhibitiontodisplaysomeofthe
fantasticworkuploadedtothegroup
daily.Angelasays,‘Anexhibitionwas
oneofmygoalsforSheClicks,soI
wasdelightedwhenOlympusUK
offeredtosponsoroneattheAfter
NynegalleryinHollandPark.’Makingthecut
Anopencallwasputoutfor
submissionsfortheexhibition,with
just 50 covetedspacesupforgrabs.
Tohelpmanagethesubmission
andselectionprocess,Photocrowd
offereditsservices(youmaybe
familiarwithPhotocrowdfromour
APOYcompetition).Over2,000
imageswereentered,givingthe
judgesa toughjobtowhittleit
downtotherequiredamount.A groupoftenjudgeshelped
tochoosetheimages,including
AP’sownTracyCalder(Acting
TechniqueEditor)andme,Amy
Davies(co-FeaturesEditor).Other
judgesincludedSonyAmbassador
KateHopewell-Smith,freelance
photographerAstridMcGechan,
GeorginaPavelinfromOlympus,
andAngelaNicholsonherself.
Theimagesselectedrepresenta
fantasticcross-sectionofdifferent
genres,asAngelaexplains:‘The
brieffortheexhibitionwasopen,
whichmeantwegota verywide
spreadofsubjectsandtechniques.
Thatmadethejudges’taskharder,
butwewereallkeenforthe
exhibitiontoshowtherange
ofphotographythat’sdoneby
SheClicksmembers.
‘Wecouldeasilyhavecreateda
greatexhibitionwithtentimes
thenumberofprints,andit was
heartbreakingtohavetoexclude
someoftheimagesthatwere
submitted.However,it was
wonderfultobeabletobreak
thenewstothe 50 photographers
whoseimagesaregoingtofeature
intheexhibition.A feweven
messagedmetoletmeknowthat
they’dcriedwithhappiness.’The SheClicks exhibition can be viewed at the After Nyne Gallery, 10 Portland Road, Notting Hill,
London W11 4LA. It is open Wednesday, 25 September–Tuesday, 1 October (closed on Sundays and Mondays).
