CRYSTALS

Use a narrow aperture (and long
exposure if required) to capture
the crystal in its sharpest form

Use the autumn light and landscapes to explore
and learn how to control colour temperatures

(^) White balance
Experiment with the camera’s different
modes of white balance, such as Daylight
or Shade – which will warm up images.
(^) Filters
Polarisers and neutral-density filters can
make big improvements to autumn images
by saturating colours and reducing glare.
(^) Post-production work
Use software to manipulate the temperature
and tint of an image after it’s been shot.

TIPS FOR GETTING A GREAT SHOT...
Choose a plain coloured background
such as black or white, as this will
avoid distracting attention away
from the impact of the face paint.
Using hard lighting works best
to highlight the model and make
her the centre of attention.

TIPS FOR GETTING A GREAT SHOT...
Crystals have very reflective surfaces,
so make sure you and your equipment
don’t show up in any of the facets.
It’s best to shoot in raw mode so that you
can manipulate the colour temperature
in post-production. Crystals are tricky
to capture correctly when shooting.

Make sure the horse is comfortable with
you and your gear. You might want to test
the sound of the shutter beforehand; if
the horse is spooked, use a telephoto
lens from a distance instead.
For zoomed-in portraits, use a wide
aperture to blur the background and
make the horse the main focal point.

CREATIVE
PAT TERNS
Creating these pop art-inspired patterns
can be fun and very simple.
(^) Colour theme
Choosing a strong and bold background
colour that contrasts with your subject
matter can produce dramatic results. Place
subjects on (or in front of) bright papers, or
on top of a lightbox to backlight them.
(^) Edit to repeat
To create a repeated pattern when editing,
shoot one single subject, select it, copy it
onto new layers and then paste it several
times around the canvas.

SACRED PLACES
Post-production work can
always help generate an
original photograph
Producing an original picture of sacred
buildings can be a challenge due to the
large number of tourists they attract.
(^) Experiment
Try using different lenses – think fisheyes
or a Lensbaby – to create distinctive effects.
(^) Off-peak
Visiting sacred locations at quieter times
like the winter seasons can affect how many
people are visiting and what the buildings
look like in different weather conditions.
(^) Be respectful
Always tread carefully in sacred places:
only photograph where allowed, and
follow the rules to avoid causing offence. G

TIPS FOR GETTING A GREAT SHOT...
(^) Reduce the brightness of your LCD
screen so your eyes adjust to the dark.
(^) Find out the timings of meteor displays
by referring to specialist websites such
as Nasa’s Solar System Exploration.
(^) Use a shutter release cable or the
camera’s built-in timer, so that you don’t
blur the photo when pressing the shutter.
(^) Take a test image lasting a few seconds,
with a high ISO and wide aperture. Zoom
in to check your focus on the LCD screen.

8 ESSENTIALS YOU NEED
1 Underwater housing: To keep your camera
kit totally shielded from the elements.
2 Swimming costume/wetsuit: This depends
on the water temperature of your location!
3 Breathing equipment: Scuba diving can be
expensive and hard to learn, but will achieve
deeper shots compared to snorkelling.
4 A location: Grab travel brochures, scour the
internet or head to your local shoreline.
5 Test shots: Choose your camera settings
and then take several images to check them.
6 Lens: A wide or fisheye lens is usually
needed in underwater housing.
7 Lighting: Strobes are a popular way to
provide illumination when underwater.
8 Editing software: Lightroom is the best
software to control colour temperature.

TIPS FOR GETTING A GREAT SHOT...
Switch to Shutter Priority mode and
set the exposure to at least 1/1,000
sec. If you’re shooting a game at night,
bump up the ISO to 1,600 or higher.
Use a fast continuous drive shooting
mode and fire bursts of shots as players
get near enough to fill the frame.
The higher the contrast of the
image, the more effective it will be
