Pastels and props
“I really like the contrast of this
photo, and how the red and blue
have clear differences and really
pop,” says Will. He purposely chose
to shoot during the day in strong
sun. “I love how one side of the
parking garage is in direct sunlight
while the other is in shadow.
“I enjoy shooting street and
portrait photography during
daylight hours. You get great
shadows that you can really
play around with. I also love how
the colours are more of a soft
pastel look – along with the wig.”

Sliding colours
Will says: “Originally
this photo was just about
symmetry, but once I’d
imported it into Lightroom,
I decided to make larger
adjustments. The sky
was originally blue and the
parking garage was red. The
colours were tweaked using
the Hue slider in Lightroom
to achieve the final edit.”

Angling upwards
Will says: “We were in
a parking garage with
many levels, and I wanted
to get a portrait that was
shot facing upwards.
I feel like a lot of people
are used to seeing the
angle of shooting from
above a model, and
I wanted to do the
opposite here. Shooting
upwards also allowed
me to use the sky as
the backdrop, which
was key in my mind.”

William Trostel

n the day of this shoot, William Trostel and
model Vasia met up to roam around the
City of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. “I go
into a lot of shoots with a set idea in
my head,” he says. “This one, however,
was not one of those shoots. We just grabbed a
bunch of props and outfits, then roamed around the
city and shot some ideas on the spot with what we had.”
After some playful meandering in spots around the city,
the pair then decided to head up into this parking garage.
It was a bright and sunny day, but Will figured he could
use the harsh shadows – as well as the architecture

  • to his advantage. “This is what we came up with as
far as composition,” says Will, whose was aim was to
use something that was very simple and mundane, but
perhaps overlooked. “With a bright blue sky behind the
model and no clouds, that added to my idea of keeping
things simple. In terms of editing, I then wanted to
add in big colour and an obvious contrast.”
