Ask questions
Arriving at any new place, it pays to ask questions.
Timings for sunrise and sunset are important for
any landscape photographers. But more than just golden hours,
weather and lighting conditions, I ask questions about daily
life and about special events, festivals, ceremonies or traditions.
It’s useful to know not just when and where something is
happening, but the best place to see and shoot the action from.
It’s about being at the right place at the right time, rather than
finding out about an incredible, photogenic event after it’s over.

Explore
Many countries have busy tourist hotspots, like Angkor
Wat or Piazza San Marco, that can be hard to capture
without lots of tourists in your pictures. I prefer to get off the beaten
track, whether that’s exploring far from a city’s main sights, driving
into remote villages or hiking up mountains, to take photos that are
hopefully more original and less spoiled by the presence of tourists.
Travel companions can make a trip more enjoyable – but when I
really want to concentrate on photography, I go out alone.
It really helps me to connect with a place.
