Scout for the
best location
The main image was shot
at sunrise – but I spent the day
before searching for compositions,
knowing that I would return
during better light. I tried various
compositions as I framed Liberty
Bell Peak (in Washington State’s
North Cascades National Park)
and settled on the one you can
see in the main image. The next
morning, when it was dark and
cold, I was ready and knew
exactly what needed to be done.

Use a tripod
It may seem obvious to bring
a tripod on a sunrise landscape
shoot; but with camera technology
improving, excellent high-ISO performance
and accurate autofocus, you may think
that a heavy tripod is not necessary.
A tripod does more than stabilise your
camera: it acts as an easel, much like
an artist would rest their canvas on. It
allows you to slow down and be much
more considerate with our framing. Even
in bright conditions, I will always use a tripod.
