50 TIPS FOR AUTUMN

SHAPES

2

Foliage of all
shapes and sizes
can look beautiful in
the autumn season.
In woodlands where the
cover is less dense, use
shafts of sunlight to pick
out individual plants
(such as ferns) and
fungi. Use shapes and
contrasting light to
create graphic images.

FOREST
FLOORS

3

In woodland
locations, look out
for subjects at your feet.
Toadstools can be found
around tree stumps,
and many fungi species
produce fruiting bodies
in autumn. Shoot down
at their level for more
engaging results.

FILL THE FRAME

1

If subjects are visually
spectacular, why not zoom
in or move yourself closer so that
they take up the whole frame?
Honing in on repeating elements
creates a powerful composition,
especially with vivid hues.

MIGHTY

MACRO

Hone your eye on leafy textures
and capture colour in close-up
with the help of a macro setup

hen autumn leaves cascade
to the ground and turn into
beautiful multicoloured
shades, they reveal a delicate
structure of veins that are
perfectly suited for close-up imagery.
To capture detail at larger-than-life
magnifications, your best bet is to grab
a macro lens and a tripod. That being
said, many optics – even kit lenses –
are capable of focusing close enough
to photograph a leaf in its entirety.
Don’t just limit your macro shots to
leaves, though. Berries, fruits and tree
trunks also make interesting subjects.
