50 TIPS FOR AUTUMN

WATERFALLS

12

Falls are a visual
treat all year, but a
surround of vibrant leaves
makes them extra-special.
Use a zoom lens such as
a 70-200mm to create a
tighter composition. In
Manual mode, experiment
with long exposures –
attach an ND filter if it’s
too bright – to blur water
into silky slow motion.

PANNING

13

Woods full of
vertical trees look
dreamy when panned
from top to bottom
during an extended
exposure. To try this
intentional camera
movement, switch to
Shutter Priority mode
and start with an
exposure of 1/30 sec.
Keep the pan smooth.

FILTERS

11

Warming filters can be used
to boost colourful scenes.
Lee Filters’ Autumn Tint Set of
three different filters – with hard
and soft gradations – enhances
the rich golds, reds and browns
that typify the Autumn season.

LUSCIOUS

LANDSCAPES

Nothing says autumn like a woodland scene of fiery leaves.
Here’s the kit and technique to get the warmest reception

s the golden hours play
such a big part in landscape
photography, it’s a joy to know
that sunrise gets later and
later in autumn, especially
when the clocks go back at the end of
October. Aside from having more time in
bed in the mornings, the sun stays lower
in the sky for longer in the evening, making
that golden ‘hour’ last a little longer, too.
Autumn is traditionally a time for slowing
down after a busy summer, so take time to
really consider the framing and lighting of
your scenes. Shooting with a low sun to
one side results in elongated shadows;
shooting into the sun works for dramatic
sunrises, silhouettes and backlit images.
Use ND grad filters to balance the exposure
of a sky that’s brighter than the land.
