50 TIPS FOR AUTUMN

5 QUICK TIPS

FOR SHOOTING

THE ELEMENTS

HOW TO ENHANCE SCENES WITH
SETTINGS AND COMPOSITION

36

MANUAL FOCUS
Autofocus systems
struggle to focus on
reflections, as well as
in mist. By switching to Manual
mode, you’ll be able to set the
point of focus precisely yourself.

37

CREATIVE DEPTH
Experiment with the aperture
when you’re working with tighter
frames. Widen the aperture to
generate bokeh behind your
subject – a great approach for
lone trees or a branch of leaves.

EXPOSURE LEVELS
Bright misty conditions can
actually fool your camera’s
meter into underexposing
the scene. If this happens,
dial in a stop or so of positive
exposure compensation.
REFLECTIONS
35
Make the most of rich autumn colours by doubling them in a watery
reflection. Check the forecast for low winds, a still morning and undisturbed
waters. To reflect more of the scene, have the camera pointed slightly downwards.
SILHOUETTES
34
Exposing for the brighter part of the
scene throws your main focal point
into a dark outline. Shoot during the golden
hours for contrasting light. Silhouettes work
best when the subject has a defined shape.

LEADING LINES
The traditional ‘rules’ of
photography can be used in any
season. To create a balanced
composition, make leading lines
from footpaths, an avenue of
trees, or field boundaries.

PLAY WITH THE SUN
Look for sun rays peeking
through the tree canopies and
use them for creative effect. If
you find you’re shooting directly
into the sun, avoid lens flare by
positioning it behind a trunk.
