How to master the
Content-Aware Fill tool
This updated Fill tool offers greater control
than ever when removing unwanted details
Content-Aware
As well as the Content-Aware Fill
command, you’ll find Content-Aware
technology at work through various
tools in Photoshop. For starters, it’s
in the old Content-Aware Fill tool,
found by going to Edit > Fill then
setting Use: Content-Aware.
It’s also built into the Spot Healing
Brush and the Patch Tool to help
with retouching, and it features
as a setting within the Crop Tool
options, allowing you to crop
outside the original bounds of
your image and have Photoshop
generate new edges for you.James

by rebuilding parts of your image, helping
you remove unwanted objects, improve
messy details or tidy up a composition.
The feature has been a part of Photoshop
for some time, but was recently given a welcome update,
making it much more controllable than before.
Previously you would make a selection, use Content-
Aware Fill and then Photoshop would determine what
to remove by analysing the rest of the frame and
generating new pixels based on the content of the image.
The problem is, it occasionally samples and uses parts
that you don’t want to replicate. Here, for example,
I want to remove the distracting leaf from next to
the lizard’s head. But a straightforward fill results
in a mess of pixels as the command samples details
from the lizard’s body, the tree and elsewhere.
This is where the new Content-Aware Fill command
comes in. I can be very specific about which parts of
the photo I want the command to sample from, so
I can exclude the foreground details and force it
to use the blurry backdrop instead. I can also
fine-tune the way it samples and reuses pixels.T
