Create glorious grain Before & after

Here’s a simple way to compare
different grain treatments while
you experiment. Lightroom
enables you to see a Before and
After view by pressing the Y key.
And by right-clicking on any step
in History, you can choose to set
that as the Before, allowing you
to easily compare different
Grain settings.

rain is a funny beast. We do our
utmost to get rid of the digital
version of it (noise) in our raw files.
But then we often end up adding
an emulated analogue version
of it back in, to give our photos a more organic
feel. The huge irony is that in the film days,
they were doing their best to get rid of grain
in the photos, as it was seen as a defect.
It’s amazing what a bit of nostalgia can do...
Using grain helps remove that clinical digital
feel when you’re looking for something extra in
a photo. It’s rare that I will do a black-and-white
conversion without some kind of grain addition.
I just love what it does to the photo.
Lightroom’s Grain Tool is actually really
effective and has more than enough control to
achieve what you want. Located in the Effects
Panel in Develop are the three sliders for this
control. There’s Amount, for the strength of
the effect; Size, for the size of the individual
grains; and Roughness, for the randomness
of the grain shape. Together, these sliders
allow for a huge range of different grain looks.
