Warming
the face
I’m starting here
by opening the image in
Camera Raw and choosing
the Camera Portrait profile
in the Camera Matching set.
This replicates the Portrait
picture style in the camera
settings. (These Camera
Matching profiles will
vary depending on the
options on your camera.)
Next I use the Adjustment
Brush to warm the colours
on the face. I grab the
Adjustment Brush from
the Camera Raw toolbar,
click the plus icon next
to Temperature and paint
over the face, then adjust
Temperature and Tint
until the face looks right.

W

henever you shoot a portrait in bright
sunlight like this, it’s a good idea to
place the subject with their back to the
sun, as this prevents nasty hard shadows
falling across the face – and your subject
won’t be squinting into the sun. It can also give you
some atmospheric backlighting along the edge of the
hair and body. However, sometimes this kind of angle
can lead to colour issues, as the face in shade may
turn out cooler than the warm sunlit backdrop.
I’ll address the mismatch in colour temperatures
with local adjustments in Camera Raw, then go
on to enhance the face with raw retouching tricks

  • including a neat skin smoothing trick with
    Camera Raw’s new Texture command.
