Cropping, Curves
and Calibration
After cropping in tighter to the head, I use Curves
to add punch and contrast to the image with an S-curve. By
pulling down on the very top part of the curve line, Iā€™m able
to flatten out the highlights, which can often look good
when an image has blown-out highlights like this.
Finally, I use the Camera Calibration panel (third in from
the right) to further tweak the colours, adding a magenta
tint to the shadows and tweaking the green primary settings.

Raw retouching
The Texture command
in Camera Raw and
Lightroom is equally adept at
smoothing out textures as it is at
enhancing them. As such, it can be
very effective for skin smoothing in portraits, because it evens
out the skin tones without blurring the fine details like pores.
Using the Adjustment Brush again, I click the minus icon
next to Texture a couple of times, then paint over the skin
to smooth it. I can also use the Adjustment Brush to boost
the eyes, whiten the teeth and enhance the clothes. (See
the full walkthrough in the accompanying video.)
