Maximum PC - USA (2019-10)

(Antfer) #1
close, however, barring the 5700 XT’s
apparent panic attack when we tried
to test Middle Earth: Shadow of War.
These figures will likely fluctuate a
little as both AMD and Nvidia release
updated drivers for their cards, but it’s
safe to say that the best performance
is provided by the 2070 Super.
In a wider selection of games, the
5700 XT only lags behind the 2070
Super by an average of three frames
per second at 1440p ultra. The 2060
Super, on the other hand, sits 11fps
behind its big brother on average—
though still comfortably within a good
range for 1440p gaming.

Performance
Unlike the last time we looked at
GPUs here, all three of these cards
pack the same amount of VRAM: eight
gigs of it, to be exact. The speed is
the same, too: 14GT/s, across the
board. As such, we’re forced to pay
more attention to the architecture of
the cards, considering CUDA cores
and texture units. Looking at the raw
numbers here, the RTX 2070 Super
should be a clear winner.
So, on to the benchmarks. As
predicted, the 2070 Super dominated
in almost every game we tested, with
only a handful of games favoring AMD.
The differences are frequently quite

It’s the RTX 2070 Super, but only
just. Looking at the scores, we saw
one point in favor of the 2060 Super,
then two points each for the 5700
XT and 2070 Super. Ultimately, we
decided that performance was more
important than value, but that’s a very
significant caveat: If you’ve got limited
funds, but want to game at 1440p, the
RX 5700 XT might be best. It’s a high-
quality card that stomps the similarly
priced 2060 Super into a fine paste.
The fact remains, though, that
the 2070 Super is the superior GPU.
Great 1080p and 1440p performance
and a variety of excellent factory-
overclocked models mean that if
you’ve got $500 to drop on graphics,
this is the card you need. The original
2070 was a quality card, but this is a
step up; performance that outstrips
its predecessor without doing any
more damage to your wallet.
Tragically, that means that the poor
old 2060 Super is left out in the cold. It’s
not a bad card by any means—don’t get
us wrong—but it lacks the performance
and value of the other two, which really
makes it hard to recommend, unless
system power is something you’re
trying very hard to minimize. And if you
are doing that, why?

ROUND 4

From lef t to right:
The RX 5700 XT is still
kinda ugly.

Nvidia’s current
budget card, the
2060 Super, fails to
impress here.

Triple-fan units are
available for the 2070
Super, but we didn’t
test with that.

Best scores in bold. Our test bed consists of an Intel Core i7-8700K, 16GB of G.Skill DDR4-3200, a Gigabyte Z370
Aorus Gaming 7, and a 1TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2. All games are tested at their highest graphical profile with AA
turned on at 1440p. Figures provided are an average and a minimum (97th percentile) respectively.
