Work with Images in

Affinity Publisher

1

IMPORT IMAGES
If you want to edit images within a page layout app, you need
to get them there. Affinity Publisher has a standard “Place”
command, from the “File” menu, or a Place Image tool in the
bottom of the toolbar. Better than these, however, is the Picture
Frame tool, which opens a Properties palette that’s missing if
you “Place” an image. From Properties, you can fit an image to
the frame in various ways, and stroke the edge of the frame
to create a hard border between it and the rest of the document.

FIND IMAGES
You can, of course, import images directly from your PC,
but there are other ways to lay your hands on images.
Serif has done deals with Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay to bring
their imagery directly into Publisher through a Stock palette
that appears on the left-hand side whenever you’ve got a picture
frame selected [Image A]. Agree to the terms and conditions of
your favored library, and you can search it for images that suit
the publication you’re working on.

IMPORT IMAGE
The easiest way to import an image from your PC is to
select an empty picture frame, or draw one, then hit
“Replace Image” at the top-left. An Explorer window appears,
and you can choose your image as you would in any other app.
W hen it’s loaded into the fr ame, you c an dr ag it around and rotate
it with the tools that appear within the frame while your mouse

SERIF’S BATTLE AGAINST ADOBE has seen its third great push forward, with the launch of
Affinity Publisher earlier this summer. While it might not be troubling InDesign CC as the page
layout tool of choice just yet (although Adobe toppled Quark, so it does happen), it comes with a
host of highly attractive features, and doesn’t require a monthly subscription.
The Affinity name has puzzled some since the series appeared, with Illustrator rival Affinity
Designer on Mac, in 2014. Publisher makes it clear what it means—the three apps (Photoshop-
a-like Affinity Photo completes the trinity) come together in the top-left corner of Publisher.
Select an image and click the “Photo” button, and you’re able to edit it within Publisher using all
the tools found in Photo. The same goes for a vector illustration and Designer—as long as you
own all the apps, of course.
So, with a full set of apps installed, and updated to version 1.7, here’s our guide to the new
kids on the publishing block. Free trials of the apps are available from http://affinity.serif.com
if you want to try them out for yourself. –IAN EVENDEN

controls the zoom level. From the Properties palette,
you can choose various methods of auto-fitting, too.

LAYERS
Each object in Affinity Publisher exists on its own
layer. The Layers palette acts in exactly the same
way it does in Adobe apps, except the control to show and
