Horlogerie 2018
Smoothly shifting up a gear
Bigger, more connected and more open than ever, the Salon
International de la Haute Horlogerie 2018 concluded on a successful
note, heralding a promising year for Fine Watchmaking. This year the
SIHH recorded almost 20,000 visitors as a whole, an approximate
increase of 20% versus 2017, along with 1,500 media accreditations,
an increase of 12% over 2017.
The 28th edition of the Salon hosted 35 Maisons in all, compared
with 30 last year and 16 just three years ago. This implied enlarging
the total exhibition area to 55,000 sq. meters, 20% more than
previously. The Salon also generated 400,000 posts featuring the
hash-tag #SIHH2018, achieving a global reach of 288 million people
throughout the event. As we all look forward to SIHH 2019 that will
take place from January 14th to 18th 2019 at Palexpo – Geneva,
here are some highlights from the 28th edition.
A. LANGE & SÖHNE
1815 “Homage to Walter Lange”
in steel
With an extraordinary one-of-a-
kind timepiece, A. Lange & Söhne
pays tribute to the individual
who in 1990 brought precision
watchmaking back to Glashütte.
The combination of a stoppable
sweep seconds hand, a black
enamel dial and a steel case
reflects the eminent heritage of the
Saxon watchmaking dynasty. The
classic dial, reduced to the essence,
is complemented with a technical
feature that warrants a further look:
the jumping seconds hand. With
this combination, it quite likely lives
up to Walter Lange’s vision of a
perfect watch.

TRIPLE SPLIT
The TRIPLE SPLIT is
the first mechanical split-
seconds chronograph
in the world that allows
multi-hour comparative
time measurements.
Additional rattrapante
hands on the minute and
hour totalisers make it
possible to stop lap and
reference times of events
that last as long as twelve
hours.
AUDEMARS PIGUET
Royal Oak Rd#2
Complications and
ultra-thin models: two
time-honoured Audemars
Piguet specialties meet
in the Royal Oak RD#2.
It has taken five years to
develop the new ultra-
thin 5133 calibre with
perpetual calendar. The
challenge has been to
re-engineer a three-storey
movement into a single
level, making it ultra-
thin while combining
and re-arranging
functions to boost
ergonomy, efficiency and
robustness. This patented
system features a record
shattering 2.89 mm
central rotor. At just 6.30
mm, the redesigned case
shaves almost 2 mm off
the Royal Oak Extra-Thin
Jumbo, making the Royal
Oak RD#2 the thinnest
self-winding perpetual
calendar on the market
today.
