he Highest Civilian Awards called as “Padma Awards”
(Three categories - Padma Vibhushan, Padma
Bhushan and Padma Shri) are given by government
of India to eminent achievers in various disciplines and
fields of activities such as Art, Social Work, Public Affairs,
Science &Engineering, Trade &Industry, Medicine, Literature
& Education, Sports, Civil Services, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’
is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma
Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma
Shri’ for distinguished service in any field.

The awards, which are announced on the occasion of Republic
Day every year, are conferred by the President of India at
ceremonial functions held at Rashtrapathi Bhavan during
the months of March or April of the concerned year. This
year the President of India has approved the conferment of
Padma Awards for 85 persons (3 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma
Bhushan and 73 Padma Shri Awards) including 14women, 16
foreigners (NRI / PIO /OCI) and 3 posthumous awardees.

Renowned Archaeologist, historian, Litterateur and Author
Dr.Nagaswamy from Tamil Nadu is also one among the
awardees. Taking into consideration his achievements and
services in the field of Archaeology, government of India has
conferred on him the prestigious ‘Padma Bhushan’ award.
