The Kentish Plover
Charadrius alexandrinus is a small
shorebird in the family Charadriidae
with a very large range. It is mainly
seen on fl ats with shallow water
in intertidal zones. Its main prey
base includes terrestrial and aquatic
invertebrates, usually found on the
surface of mudfl ats and beaches.
During foraging, the bird takes short
rapid steps, does a quick scan and
ambushes its prey, which is then
picked up and eaten.

The Pied Avocet
Recurvirostra avosetta is a large
black and white wader in the avocet
and stilt family Recurvirostridae. It
has a thin, pointed, black, upturned
beak and forages in shallow brackish
waters or mud fl ats for small
crustaceans and insects, swinging
the head in a scythe-like continuous
sideward movement.
