Apple’s first retail outlet to open in both
Singapore and Southeast Asia features a 120-
foot glass facade behind 16 trees, while the store
at Dubai Mall includes “Solar Wings” that, taking
account of the city’s hot climate, adjust to cool
down the in-store temperature as necessary.
With 340 carbon-fiber reinforced polymer rods
and 18 panels collectively spanning 180 feet,
these wings form one of the largest kinetic art
installations on the planet.
For other stores, Apple has adapted historical
architecture. Consider the example of New
York’s Grand Central Terminal, where Apple
has reportedly spent $2.5 million renovating
its retail space. In Paris, meanwhile, Apple has
repurposed a refurbished bank building as a
retail store, along the way preserving original
architectural features like marble columns and
mosaic tile floors. Similarly, in Berlin, an Apple
Store lies within the limestone walls of a former
opera house dating back to 1913.
