PLANNING Q&A

Q

Should I buy extra insurance?
Travel insurance is a no-brainer and should
be purchased at the time of booking your trip so
you’re covered for the unforeseen. When it
comes to your equipment, however, check your
home insurance – as long as you’re not using
your photography gear for business you should
be covered, even overseas. Make sure your
destination is covered specifically and that you’ve
listed all high-value items with your insurer.

Q

Can I balance a photo trip with a family
holiday and any advice for doing so?
It depends, does your family like photography as
much as you? We’d recommend keeping the trips
separate or perhaps arranging a photo workshop
for a day or two whilst the family enjoys the pool.
If you’re on holiday with family, be with the family
rather than spending a lot of time shooting. Make
your photography about capturing family
memories as well as a sly bit of culture to ‘pad out’
the family album. If you’ve an understanding
partner, maybe you can sneak out before they’ve
woken for sunrise or plan a day’s excursion, but
finding a happy balance can be tricky.

TRAVEL TIP

COMPARE AND CONTRAST
It pays to do your research and compare prices
online, not just between travel providers but also
comparison sites such as booking.com, trivago.
com, Kayak.com, Skyscanner.com and Hotels.com.
Although these sites often compare from the same
providers, the difference in price for the same
product can result in quite the savings.
Try going directly to the hotel or airline, too,
to see if it’s any cheaper – you might
be pleasantly surprised.
