If you’re overwhelmed by the many places
you want to explore, begin by researching
the travels of other photographers. Scroll
through Instagram looking for those
awe-inspiring locations you have to visit,
search in places like 500px or Steller for the
products of others’ travels, taking note of
their location tags, and subscribe to travel
blogs. There’s no better recommendation
than from a like-minded travel photographer
or blogger who have actually been to the
place recently, had success and shares their
do’s and don’ts stories. It’s the best way to
find up-to-date insider travel information,
too. With seasons shifting, extreme weather
looming and political unrest in many parts of
the world, keeping abreast of a changing
destination is only a benefit. Sites like the
Lonely Planet forum is full of eager travellers
happy to answer questions as are many avid
travel photographers directly.

If you’reunsureaboutventuringoutalone,
you could also look at joining a photo
workshop for part or all of your trip. It takes
much of the hard work out of planning and
you know you’ll return with decent images,
having been led by the nose at the right time
to the right place. But if after reading this guide
you’re wondering where you could go in
October, well, you could try China where its
dry, mild weather and golden colours make
landscapes glorious and diverse, from the
mountainous Tibetan Plateau to the tropical
lowlands where colourful minority cultures
thrive. Alternatively, how about tracking polar
bears in a tundra through Churchill, in
Manitoba, Canada or catching the Great
Migration in Tanzania? You’ve plenty to
ponder on, so time to get planning...

location, for instance the desert is not somewhere you want
to be in the summer due to the unbearable heat.
