HOW TO Use apps in Messages

1

See what’s available
When you’re writing a new message,
you’ll see a little App Store icon to the
right of the camera icon for taking
pictures. If you tap on the App Store
icon, you’ll be presented with a row
full of colourful Messages app icons.

2

Tap and hold
It’s not always obvious what each of
these icons is actually for, so tap and hold
on one to see what each really does.
Swipe from left to right get to the start
of the list: tap the blue App Store icon to
be able to download more.

3

Choose your app
We’ve chosen Giphy, where we
can find memes to put in our messages.
As you can see, tapping the app icon
effectively opens a panel with the
selected app inside it. Choosing an
item adds it to the message.

Embedding something from a
Messages app works just like adding a
photo: it appears in the main bit of the
message and then you can type
additional text if you want to add your
caption or comment.

5

Select a sticker
Sticker apps are incredibly popular
in the App Store, even from apps you
might not expect: for example the
Messages app for the social network
Reddit is just a bunch of funny cartoon
images you can stick onto messages.

6

Get to work
You can use more serious apps
in Messages too. Here we’ve installed
Dropbox, the file sharing and cloud
storage app, so tapping its icon enables
us to browse our Dropbox and add files
to our messages.

7

Share everything
If a service has social features
there’s probably a Messages app for it
too. That’s definitely the case with the
Spotify app – in the Messages version,
you can easily search for music you want
to share with others.

8

See what you’ve got
If you keep swiping through the
apps you’ve got, you’ll see a ‘More’
option, which opens the full list of
available apps, shown here. By default, all
available apps are there in alphabetical
order, but you can change that slightly.

9

Disable unwanted apps
Want to keep an app on your device
but don’t want it in Messages? Tap on
Edit and you can hide apps from the
toolbar inside the app by turning them
off individually: like other iOS toggles,
they’ll go from green to grey.
