BUYER’S GUIDE

Buyer’s guide: PPE

As they operate in one of the most dangerous sectors in the UK, it is vitally
important that forest workers protect themselves from potential hazards. While

sturdy clothing and correct use of equipment can help to minimise risk, personal
protective equipment (PPE) plays an important role in reducing the risk of serious

injury and ensures workers are meeting appropriate safety standards. PPE is
required where, even after controls and safe systems of work have been applied

and implemented, hazards remain. This may include situations where there is a
danger from falling materials or from airborne particles or from excessive noise

or temperature changes.
Following on from our general workwear guide in the April issue, in this month’s
buyer’s guide we’re taking a look at some of the available items of industry-

specific PPE, from chainsaw protective clothing and gloves to helmets and eye
protection.

STIHL’S range of protective clothing
and equipment is designed to be highly
visible and is made from materials
that offer optimal ventilation, freedom
of movement, and easy cleaning. The
Advance X-Vent jacket is light and
breathable, offering protection during
summer temperatures or when carrying
out intense physical activity. To reduce
fatigue on strenuous jobs, the trousers
are made from ultra-light Avertic ProLite
cut-protection material (EN 381).
When it comes to safety, there are
a number of pieces of equipment that
should be considered in addition to
protective clothing. The Dynamic range
includes face, eye and head protection, to
name a few. The Dynamic Expert helmet
offers four-point support and includes a
swivelling nylon mesh visor as well as an
adjustable ratchet system, while the Dynamic
MS Protect gloves are durable and warm when
working in low temperatures.
For complete eye protection whatever the weather,
the Dynamic Light Plus goggles offer ballistic protection up
to 45 m/s and are available in three different lens shades –
clear, grey and yellow – rendering them suitable for indoor,
bright and overcast working conditions.
When you’re on your feet all day, comfortable,
breathable footwear is essential, which is why the water-
resistant Dynamic Ranger GTX chainsaw boots with a
cushioned midsole and non-slip tread are perfect for
longer jobs.
