Forestry Journal – May 2018

THE risks associated with forestry come from using heavy
machinery in a potentially very dangerous area where there
is the possibility of encountering a large amount of debris.
Having unobscured vision and eyewear that keeps you safe
in this environment is immensely important.
Nothing but Safety Glasses offer a range of protective
eyewear, including safety glasses and hybrid safety glasses.
These protect against low-energy impacts such as deflected
debris from tools and are suitable for a lot of work situations.
They have the flexibility of being worn under face shields for
an added layer of protection. Certain models when worn with
a head strap provide protection against high-impact hazards.
The Bolle Tracker II hybrid safety glasses are a good
example of these.
Safety goggles are useful for high-energy impact hazards
as well as protection against dust particles in sealed
versions. They can also give protection against intense
heat, dangerous liquids and gases. Some models will
accommodate half-mask respirators and enable the wearer to
wear their existing eyewear under the goggles. A great pair
of goggles to meet most needs would be these Bolle Blast
sealed-frame safety goggles.
If there is the potential for high-energy flying particles,
electrical risks, intense temperatures or chemical splashes in
the working environment, the use of a face shield to protect
the full facial area would be advisable. This can be worn over
either existing glasses, safety glasses or some hybrid safety
glasses for added protection. The popular Bolle Sphere face
shield is a good example.
Depending on whether the work takes places inside
or outside and the conditions that you work in, it may be
appropriate to have a couple of different lens choices to help
when the sun’s out or when the conditions aren’t so great.
Some of the popular choices for forestry include the clear
lens, which filters out 10% or less of the visible spectrum
providing as near to natural vision as possible. They also
filter out 100% of harmful UV light.
Yellow/twilight lenses are very popular when working on
situations of a similar colour such as snow or on cloudy
overcast days. Smoke/grey/flash/mirrored lenses are not
dissimilar to traditional sunglasses and are ideal when
working in bright outdoor conditions.
The Contrast Lens has a gradient of tint from dark at the
top to clear at the bottom. These are now preferred by many
that used to wear clear lenses as they protect from sun glare
and lighting above but allow high clarity when working at eye
level or below. With the right eye protection most eye injuries
could be prevented, reducing time away from work and
increasing the employee’s wellbeing at work.
