100 Tyre Asia April/May 2018

Apart from the fact that cost of a retread is generally in
the range of 30% of the cost of a new tyre, retread by
itself is a recycling process. Scrapping and destruction of
a tyre or any rubber product can cause atmospheric and
air pollution affecting the environment. Hence every tyre
should be recycled by a quality retreading process, as
many times as possible, to protect our environment and to
preserve planet earth

f the objective of a vehicle owner
/ fleet operator is to minimize the
cost of tyres and to maximize
the performance and life of tyres
purchased, then it is imperative that he
should be aware and take care of the
factors that influence the performance
and life of tyres.
We saw, in a general way that the
major factors are – Application, Vehicle
condition, Road, Driving habits and
Seasonal effects. now we shall take a
close look at these factors for better
understanding and resultant action plans
to minimize their effects.

  1. Application Factors :

They are in a nutshell, overloading
(beyond the recommended / rated
loads), Improper Loading of vehicles,
over or under inflation of tyres (every
tyre manufacturer specifies the rated
inflation and it is marked on each tyre),

speed and the improper dual matching
of tyres when fitted in a dual fitment
position.

  1. Vehicle conditions :
It goes without saying that it is essential
to maintain the vehicle in good
    mechanical condition. Any short fall
or lack of maintenance directly affects
the performance and life of the tyres.
each type of mechanical defect in the
