evolutionary concepts keep
transforming mobility at
breathtaking speed and in tandem,
the perfect storm of innovation
disruption sweeps across global tyre
industry. While the focus has been more on
four-wheeler and multi-wheeler vehicles
and their tyres, the growth of the two-
wheeler industry has by and large gone
less noticed in comparison. One may argue
that two-wheeler motorbikes have always
attracted attention, especially by the youth.
But what has been happening in the non-
motor bicycle industry would take anyone
by surprise. It has grown manifold over
the years, not only in number but also in
innovative concepts.
In 2016 the global bicycle market was
worth USD 45.08 billion and is projected
to grow to reach USD 62 billion by 2024,
according to the statistic portal Statista.
That is USD 17 billion in eight years. It
may look less intimidating compared to
four-wheeler market, but it point towards a
healthy and positive trend. More and more
people prefer cycling to driving. This is not
merely for physical exercise or for leisure,
but also for commuting to work place.
We see how mobility industry is
increasingly turning towards public
transport systems and how people are
discouraged to take their own vehicles
to the road, which impacts health and
environment acutely. In several countries
this has led to the increasing use of
bicycles. In Europe and the US, this

was always a growing trend. In China,
Indonesia, Vietnam and many other South
Asian countries motorbikes conquered the
roads which were once ruled by bicycles.
The trend is now reversing. It is now
happening in India as well.
And the cycle industry has responded
to this positively. Amazingly new
concepts are being introduced not only
in cycle designing, but also in tyres. The
monotonous uniformity in cycle design is a
thing of the past. We now talk about road
bikes, mountain bikes, sports bikes and
even hybrid bikes, which is a combination
of mountain bikes, road bikes and touring
bikes. There are premium range, mid range
and low range bikes.
Bike tyres also come in amazing varieties
and concepts. Bridgestone’s air-free bike
tyres and Continental’s tubeless tyres are
only two examples to show how bike tyre
industry is attracting growing attention.
Many governments now encourage the use
of pedaling bikes, providing facilities and
even subsidies for buying bikes. The rate
of growth may be slow compared to its big
brothers. But it is literally a healthy growth.
Bikes have joined the carbon buster club in
a big way.
