1962
Following the completion of the
Murban-3 well in May 1960, which
produced crude oil at a rate
of 3,674 barrels per day, the
fi rst oil exports depart from
Das Island.
1964
Sheikh Zayed and his brother,
Sheikh Shakbout, establish
fraternal relations with King Faisal
Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of
Saudi Arabia.
1966
Sheikh Zayed becomes Ruler
of Abu Dhabi and appoints his
son, Sheikh Khalifa, as Ruler’s
Representative in Al Ain. They both
move to Abu Dhabi.
1968
On February 18, Britain announces
its intention to withdraw from
the Trucial States. Sheikh Zayed
and Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al
Maktoum of Dubai agree on
a federation.
2004
On November 2, Sheikh Zayed
dies and is later buried in the
courtyard of the Sheikh Zayed
Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.
2018
The Year of Zayed in the UAE is
decreed. A monument is unveiled
in Abu Dhabi to celebrate his life.
2008
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque,
which Sheikh Zayed commissioned
in 1996, is completed and unveiled
to the public.
