INTERNET OUTAGES

UK businesses lost almost 82

million hours to internet outages

in 2017, according to research
by business internet service

provider Beaming. More than 500

UK businesses using a range of

internet providers and connectivity

services were surveyed. On

average, they suffered two major
internet outages each during 2017

that prevented them from trading

or accessing vital services online.

Although this was half the number

experienced in 2016, the total

amount of productive time lost
increased by four per cent year on

year, mainly due to the severity of

the outages.

EMAIL BAN

One council in New York City has
proposed a bill to make it illegal
for businesses with more than
10 people to contact employees
during off-work hours, including
weekends and holidays. If the bill
is passed, businesses will receive
fines for contacting workers
during the hours they’re out of
the office, which will be payable
directly to the workers.

APPLE OF AI

Apple has hired Google’s chief of
search and artificial intelligence,
reports the New York Times. John
Giannandrea, who helped
integrate artificial intelligence in
Google’s products, will run Apple’s
machine learning and AI strategy
and will be one of 16 executives
who report directly to CEO Tim
Cook. The hire is a major coup
for Apple, which many Silicon
Valley executives and analysts
view as lagging behind its peers in
artificial intelligence.

SUPERFAST 5G

Vodafone, EE, O2 and Three all
won the bandwidth needed for
future 5G services, which are
due to be launched in 2020. It’s
expected 5G will provide much
faster connections than currently
available. The frequency band
for 5G, called 3.4GHz, is not yet
compatible with most current
devices, but will be used for the
roll-out of faster networks. Digital
minister Margot James says the
spectrum: “Will be instrumental
in further improving 4G mobile
services now, while helping the
UK to lead the 5G revolution.”
