My Pope Philippines – August 2018

(avery) #1
Zosimo and his law school classmates
enjoyed a relationship of equals.

Zosimo's dedication and service did
not go unnoticed, as is evident in
his many awards!

Everyday Heroes

Achievement Unlocked Zosimo in his toga during
his graduation from the University of Batangas
Law School on March 27, 2013.

STEADFAST FAITH

Disheartened and dispirited by
the experience and concerned
about the stability of his family,
which by now consisted of
three young children, Zosimo
decided to leave the service.
But the announcement of a
competitive exam to produce
a qualified junior police officer
for a five-month training in
Police Investigation cropped
up, canceling his intention
to quit. “I was one of the four
examinees who topped the
examination.”

His experience at the Royal
Hong Kong Police Force proved
to be a tipping point. “It made
me determined to pursue
my career as police officer no

matter how dangerous the
tasks might be. I believed that
God intervened to help me stay
the course by providing me
with incentives not to abandon
the police service.”

Despite all the bad press the
country’s law enforcement
agency has received—whether
false or accurate—Zosimo
remains loyal to the branch of
government he has devoted
much of his life to. He
passionately declares, “It is a
vital component of governance.
Its mission is to maintain
peace and order so that the
people can freely engage in
the productive undertaking
that is necessary for social
and economic development.”
He goes on to espouse the

value of the police force by
saying, “Without an effective
and efficient law enforcement
system, the resulting chaos
and anarchy may destroy the
nation. State agents provide
stability in the country, a
phenomenon that is required
to sustain economic growth. I
am proud to be a retired police
officer in the same way that
my son Zosimo, Jr. is proud to
be a navy captain and military
attache in Indonesia.”

GIVING UP ON ANY UNDERTAKING

LAW SCHOOL LIFE
Being senior in years to all of
his law school classmates did
not faze this man, known for his
grit and tenacity. “Giving up on
any undertaking never figures
in my imagination,” he says. “I
am always resolute in reaching
the conclusion of whatever I
start. I do not subscribe to the
ningas kugon mentality.”
