Maria Sivori and Mario
José Bergoglio found
each other! The couple
married on December
12, 1935, at the
Basilica of San Carlo
Borromeo and Maria
Ausiliatrice.

Fr. Pozzoli was born in Senna
Lodigiana, in the vicinity of Lodi
in 1880. He moved to Argentina
in 1906, where he died in 1961.
He was a very important figure
for the Bergoglio family—and
not just because he baptized
the children. As Pope Francis
mentioned in a letter written
on the 29th anniversary of the
priest’s death. “Fr. Pozzoli was
very close to the Sivoris, my
mother’s family that lived in
Quintino Bocayuva 556. My
mom’s brothers, especially the
eldest, Vicente, were very close
to him.” It was also through
the Salesian priest that Jorge’s
parents met.
