MUSIC
The Beach Boys
with The Royal
Philharmonic
Imagine their
timeless multi-
layered vocal
symphonies and
some of the original
backing wrapped in
a lush orchestral
setting. The
different moods
and arrangements
make you approach
the songs in a whole
new way. Hearing
God Only Knows
and Wouldn’t It Be
Nice powered by
sweeping strings
and booming brass
is a marriage made
in heaven.

City Art Centre, Edinburgh
Edinburgh-born and raised, Lucas
exhibited regularly in his home town from
1933, and towards the end of the 1930s
switched from watercolour to oil painting
as he became interested in surrealism.
Lucas cultivated an original and highly
imaginative style of painting during the
next two decades – see Caley Station,
Edinburgh, 1942 (above). This is the fi rst
major exhibition to focus on this enigmatic
artist who is, today, virtually unknown.

Subterranean shelter
Hidden London Tours

In this 70th anniversary of the
SS Empire Windrush’s arrival,
there’s a rare chance to explore
the tunnels where hundreds of
Caribbean migrants lived for
their fi rst few weeks – in
Clapham South’s deep-level
shelter, built to protect
Londoners from the Blitz. Be
warned, there are 180 steps to
descend (and ascend!).
