A
tranquil waterside location,
plus an afternoon of sun and
- most importantly – gin, made
an amazing treat for 40 Possibilities
members on a behind-the-scenes look
at the Bombay Sapphire Distillery.
The private tour of Laverstoke Mill in
Hampshire took in the company’s two
extraordinary glasshouses (below),
designed by Thomas Heatherwick.
Here members saw the ten exotic
plants – the botanicals – used to
fl avour the famous spirit, including
coriander, cassia, angelica and lemon.
They were then introduced to the
distillation process in the Dakin Still
House, and got to smell and touch the
botanicals. They chose their favourites
and marked them on a scent card,
which helped them decide which
cocktail they’d like to try in the Mill Bar.

In the gin cocktail masterclass,
members learned how to make
a variety of alcoholic treats. Some of
the more unexpected tips they
discovered included ‘caressing’
orange and lemon peel to make it
easier to extract the natural oil and
fl avour, before rubbing the peel
round the rim of a glass to add
a stylish ‘fi nish’ to the drink.
The fun, interactive session was
full of smiles and laughter – not to
mention delicious cocktails.
That’s the spirit
