You’ve stopped talking to
other people online
Chatting to people on
an online dating site
can be a thrill, but if
neither of you is
inclined to log on any
more, you’re probably
not just dating. You can
often see if people are
active in chatting apps,
so if they’re online but
not chatting to you,
it could be a hint.

The question is: ‘Is this dating
or is it a fl owering relationship?’
Nothing beats a frank conversation,
but if you’re worried about broaching
the subject too soon for fear of
upsetting the equilibrium, here are some
signs that things are progressing (or not) in
the right direction...

They’re the fi rst person you call
If you like to tell them all about your day
and they reciprocate, you could be on
to something good. However, if they tend
to share successes and worries with
friends instead, it might mean you aren’t
always uppermost in their mind.

You’ve met each other’s families
In your twenties, this meant being
introduced to the parents. If they
disapproved, it was just as likely to fan
the fl ames of passion as bring about
a break-up. But now it’s your children’s
opinions that matter – and if they’re not
happy with your partner, you’re not likely

to be either. If the new person in your life is
reluctant to let you meet their children
at this stage, they’re not ready to
move past ‘just dating’. Once you’ve
all met, as long as everyone gets
on well, you might feel you’re
already in a relationship.

You’re spending more
time together than apart
If a night out with your date
suddenly seems more appealing
than meeting up with friends,
you might be ready for something
serious. On the other hand, if you’re
dating a committed football fan
who can’t be persuaded to miss a match,
you might feel downhearted.
But remember, people can get set in their
ways, so if they refuse to skip Tuesday bingo
or Sunday tennis, don’t take it to heart. And
if they ask you to join them? Well, that’s
a sign that you’re becoming part of their life.

Be wary of the rebound
If you’re recently divorced or widowed, don’t
rush into a relationship just because
that’s what you’re used to. Be mindful of
your date’s recent romantic status, too.
