TOP 10 CHILLING SEQUENCES FROM INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS
- PODDING
AROUND IN
THE GARDEN
(INVASION OF THE BODY
SNATCHERS, 1978)
In a sequence that perfectly
demonstrates the gruesome
realisation of both the fi lm’s
in-camera physical FX and Ben
Burtt’s brutally realistic sound
effects, Donald Sutherland
unintentionally drifts off in his
backyard allowing the pod
embryos to hatch and develop
in all their ghastly glory.
8. WHERE YOU
GONNA GO?
WHERE YOU
GONNA RUN?
WHERE YOU
GONNA HIDE?
NO WHERE! (BODY
SNATCHERS, 1993)
Abel Ferrara’s revamp features
some truly chilling sequences,
including when a terrifying Meg
Tilly taps into the pod mindset
by outlining the futile situation to
her human husband. - SHRIEK SURPRISE
(INVASION OF THE BODY
SNATCHERS, 1978)
During the closing moments of
Kaufman’s 1978 remake we
follow a thought-to-be-human
Donald Sutherland, as he
blends into the pod population.
But, in what remains one of the
most chilling climatic twists in
cinema history, he is revealed
to be a pod when Veronica
Cartwright approaches
him and he reacts with that
terrifying inhuman shriek! - FINGER
PAINTING
(BODY SNATCHERS, 1993)
When a class at playschool is
asked to reveal their artwork
for all to see, everyone,
except little Andy Malone
(Reilly Murphy), has fi nger-
painted the exact strange alien
tentacle creation! The creepy
teacher voices her approval,
until she sees Andy’s work in a
goose-bump inducing moment
that singles out the poor
confused little boy. - MY HUSBAND
IS NOT MY
HUSBAND...
CARTWRIGHT
CAMEO
(THE INVASION, 2007)
Veronica Cartwright chillingly
channels unnerving angst
about ‘her husband no longer
being her husband’ to Nicole
Kidman’s psychiatrist, in a
scene originally shot to include
greater allusions to her role in
the 1978 fi lm.

hide...?’ that’s so spooky and eerie... then her
scream is so the opposite to the calm, nurturing
mother character that she’s previously been,”
considers Elise.
Indeed, a stylistic touch that
Ferrara deliberately carried over from
Kaufman’s Invasion Of The Body Snatchers was
that terrifying shrill scream, something that Elise
was at pains to perform herself when it came
time for the shock revelation that her gutsy,
once independent character, is now a pod
as well.
“I had to hold that scream longer than I
could hold my breath because these beings
don’t inhale, they just scream out!” she recalls.
“It was February in Alabama and it was cold
and if I breathed at all you would be able to
see my breath, so in-between takes I sucked on
ice cubes in the freezing cold so you wouldn’t
see me breathing.”
Ferrara’s King Of New York cinematographer
Bojan Bazelli lends an equally cold and
chilling aura to the visuals, resulting in
another stunningly lensed, distinctively
depicted and nightmarish edition to the
Body Snatching series that could also be
interpreted as an indictment on the unnerving
