Memo: Excellent work on getting the host rebellion under control. Here are
your new priorities going forward. We will be in touch.
SEASON TWO WAS ALWAYS GOING
TO END IN THE REAL WORLD
Season Two ends with Bernard, Dolores and a host
replica of Charlotte Hale making it out of the park.
“We knew that we wanted to end with one or more
of our hosts making it out into the real world,” says
co-showrunner Jonathan Nolan, “and so we started
with the end and worked our way towards the most
compelling way of telling that story.” But now they
are faced with the challenge of fl eshing out what
that world actually looks like. “The story to this point
has taken place in this artifi cial reality,” Nolan says,
“and for this story to move forward we now have
this fun/terrifying experience of building out what the
real world looks like.”
WE’LL BE GOING TO
THE DISTANT FUTURE
The post-credits scene shows a host replica of
William in the future, being tested for ‘fi delity’ by
a host replica of his daughter. “That’s defi nitely a
snippet of something that we’ll come to explore in
the future,” co-showrunner Lisa Joy promises, “and
it’s defi nitely timeline to the nth power. The thing that
really appealed to us about a story about artifi cial
intelligence is that it truly is immortal. We’re dealing
with an epic timescale at this point, so the end is just
a little bit of a tease of part of the scope of where
we’re going and part of the characters you’re going
to see there.” Nolan agrees, pointing out that “we
wanted the show to stretch over eons with these
creatures. From the beginning we said this would be
a show about the emergence of a new form of life
on earth, and that’s not a short story.”
