THE LITTLE
STRANGER
RELEASED: 21 September
DIRECTOR: Lenny Abrahamson
DISTRIBUTOR: 20th Century Fox
Sarah Waters’ clever and creepy spin on the
haunted house comes to the big screen from
Lenny Abrahamson, the brilliant director of
Room and Frank, and should be a wonderful
way to chill the blood as autumn approaches.
Domhnall Gleeson stars as a local doctor
who becomes involved with the last surviving
occupants of a crumbling mansion in 1948
England, and begins to wonder if there
might be something to the rumours of a
curse. Ruth Wilson, Will Poulter and Charlotte
Rampling co-star.

SLAUGHTERHOUSE RULEZ
RELEASED: 7 September
DIRECTOR: Crispian Mills
DISTRIBUTOR: Sony
We all know that fracking is a terrible idea that
can only lead to disaster, and that’s exactly
what happens in this boarding school-set horror
comedy. An unspeakable evil comes bursting out
of a sinkhole to terrorise students and teachers
alike, and Asa Butterfi eld, Simon Pegg, Nick
Frost, Michael Sheen and Jo Hartley are among
the unfortunate residents in the fi ring line.
Fingers crossed that director Crispian Mills has
improved on his A Fantastic Fear Of Everything.

SUSPIRIA
RELEASED: 2 November (US)
DIRECTOR: Luca Guadadigno
DISTRIBUTOR: Amazon
It feels like we’ve been waiting for
this forever. With the awards season fanfare for
Call Me By Your Name all wrapped up, we’re
fi nally going to get to see Luca Guadadigno’s
take on Dario Argento’s masterpiece. The hype’s
already begun, with co-star Chloë Grace Moretz
throwing Kubrick comparisons around and
Tarantino reportedly reduced to tears of joy, and
there’s a very good chance that this could be a
bold and brilliant new vision. At the very least,
it will look and sound beautiful (Thom Yorke’s
on soundtrack duties), and we’re excited to see
Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton sparring.

GRUDGE
16 August 2019
DIRECTOR: Nicolas Pesce
DISTRIBUTOR: Sony
The latest riff on the J-horror classic is operating
under impressive levels of secrecy, but we know
that Nicolas Pesce (director of the stunning Eyes
Of My Mother) has assembled an extremely

good cast, with Andrea Riseborough, Demián
Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin and Lin Shaye
among those lining up to be scared to death by
evil spirits.

ANNA AND THE
APOCALYPSE
RELEASED: 30 November
DIRECTOR: John McPhail
DISTRIBUTOR: Vertigo Releasing
This Scottish horror comedy high school zombie
musical has been getting some seriously
impressive buzz on the festival circuit, and we’ve
always got room in our hearts for any fi lm that
jumps around so many genres. A small town
is threatened by a zombie apocalypse and the
only thing standing between us and the end of
the world is a group of all-singing, all-dancing,
all-zombie-slaying kids.

MANDY
RELEASED: Autumn TBA
DIRECTOR: Panos Cosmatos
DISTRIBUTOR: Universal
Nicolas Cage on good form is always an
exciting prospect. Nicolas Cage on good form
in a hallucinatory revenge horror is a downright
thrilling one. Beyond The Black Rainbow
director Panos Cosmatos has reportedly created
something very special in Mandy, which
follows Cage’s bloody journey to rescue his
wife (Andrea Riseborough) from the fortress/
hellscape of a local crimelord. The trailer blew
our minds and we’re confi dent that this one will
live up to the hype.

POSSUM
RELEASED: 24 Octobwer
DIRECTOR Matthew Holness
DISTRIBUTOR: Bulldog Film Distribution
The man behind Garth Marenghi takes a
turn into full-on horror territory with this
pitch-black tale of a tortured puppeteer
(Prometheus’ Sean Harris) returning home to
face his demons. Possum got rave reviews
at the Edinburgh Film Festival early this year
and will be playing at FrightFest ahead of its
release just before Halloween.

OVERLORD
RELEASED: 25 October 2018
DIRECTOR: Julius Avery
DISTRIBUTOR: Paramount
Following the messy production and release of
the disappointing The Cloverfi eld Paradox, JJ
Abrams stepped in to clear a couple of things up
about Bad Robot’s WW2 sci-fi horror Overlord,
including the fact that it is not, as had previously
been reported, a Cloverfi eld fi lm. Jovan Adepo
and Wyatt Russell lead a strong cast, playing
paratroopers who land behind enemy lines just
before D-Day and discover that the Nazis have
been messing around with the supernatural...
