Welcome

These days we’re seeing
horror movies discussed with
the kind of regularity that
we usually associate with
think pieces about whether
or not we’ve reached comic book movie
saturation point (still waiting on that to
happen, by the way). Whether you love or
loathe the genre, there’s no disputing that
we’re in a boom period for fi lms that scare
the living hell out of audiences. They’re
winning Oscars, smashing the box offi ce,
becoming talking points for misguided
genre discussions and shredding their
way into popular culture (don’t worry,
Pennywise is back soon).
While IT may be credited for
Hollywood’s most recent love affair with
horror, James Wan’s The Conjuring
franchise has been smashing the box
offi ce and getting great reviews (apart
from the fi rst Annabelle) since the Warrens
fi rst arrived on our screens in 2013 and
it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
We can’t wait for The Nun, which takes
a nerve-shredding monster, a creepy
location (a ‘50s convent in Transylvania)
and one of the genre’s most exciting
directors in Corin Hardy. To celebrate the
latest chapter, we’ve also got a look at the
most promising upcoming chillers and an
interview with the minds behind the UK’s
biggest and best horror festival: FrightFest.
But it’s not all about horror. We go on set
for Superman prequel Krypton and speak
to the minds behind Matt Groening’s new
fantasy comedy animation Disenchantment.
We’ve also got body swapping teens
in The Innocents and AI-driven killing
machines in
Upgrade. And, of
course, we’ve got
Jason Statham
fi ghting the biggest
shark ever seen in
The Meg.

GET EXCITED ABOUT
AQUAMAN
The DC movie universe may be in a state of fl ux so
complex that all the information coming out of it is
currently of the ‘best guess’ variety, but we’re very
excited about Aquaman. Freed from the context
of Justice League, this is Jason Momoa’s time to
shine and he’s got a brilliant ensemble cast backing
him up, including Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard,
Willem Dafoe and Patrick Wilson. Perhaps most
importantly, it’s directed by the most excellent James
Wan and we’ve got all the trust in the world in him.
