he is sought-out by human time-traveller
Adam Strange, who not only forewarns him
of Brainiac but who also goes on to reveal
the history of his grandson, Kal-El. “Adam
is from our time,” begins actor Shaun Sipos,
who brings the character to life, “and he has
travelled back 200 years in the past to ensure
that Superman is born. He has this device
that allows him to travel through space and
time almost instantaneously.”
Strange and Seg endure a turbulent
relationship across the series, with the
Kyptonian blaming the human for some of
the misfortunes his family have faced. “Our
show has a lot of action,” continues Sipos,
who had a guest-starring role on Smallville
back in 2003, “but we have really taken the
time to delve into the characters and who
they are. Much the same as Game Of Thrones
did in the beginning of their seasons, we
delve into the characters and their layers, so
that you care when things happen to them.”
As the layers to Seg’s character are
pulled back, we learn that he is in a secret
relationship with Lyta-Zod (Georgina
Campbell), a member of the Military
Guild, and their tryst is forbidden by law.
The rankless should not interact with the
Guilded, especially on an intimate level.
“The Zods are the leaders of the military
and their leader is the Primus, who is Jana-
Zod [Ann Ogbonna], the grandmother of
the General Zod we know from Superman,”
Welsh explains.
“She is leading the military’s fi ght against
Black Zero,” adds the producer, “a secret
organisation, terrorists, fi ghting against the
Guilds, the military and the Voice of Rao.
They’re fi ghting for equality. They want to
dismantle the Guild system. Their motto is
that they want to begin again at zero. They
become an important part of the show. A lot
of the show revolves around what they do
and their interactions with the military.”
Seg’s lover, Lyta, is Jana’s daughter,
though the young woman is blessed with
a more compassionate outlook than most
members of her family, and Guild as a whole.
“She has had military training since she was
young, so she’s very adept at fi ghting and all
the logistics, but she has a kind of different
morality,” insists actress Georgina Campbell.
“Because she has a relationship with
someone who is rankless, that gives her this

THINGS TO DO

This is a planet
with a rich
history: there
are nine city
states to explore
plus another
legendary place
that you may
want to try
and fi nd.

Try unusual
cuisine. With
the rankless you
can chow down
on dry food
stuffs that need
rehydrating.
Try sampling
the unusual
local brews.

If you want to
try out some of
the fresh food,
make sure
you befriend
important
Guild members
with access
to special
growing rooms.

Make sure you
visit the temples
dedicated to the
sun god Rao.
In Kandor he is
all powerful. To
explore other
religions please
visit different
city states.

If you want
to look at the
Phantom Zone,
befriend an El
and visit the
Fortress Of
Solitude, which
has a lovely view
of this unusual
region...

TIPS

Make sure you stay
within the main city
states protected by
the dome. Otherwise
breathing may prove
rather diffi cult.

If travelling to
catacombs near the
tenth city state do be
wary of a powerful
being impervious to
most types of death.

While you are in
Kandor, do not
challenge the power
of Rao, unless you
want to meet a very
sticky end.

If visiting the Fortress
Of Solitude be aware
that this space is off
limits and that being
caught will likely
result in your death.
