THE OUTPOST
Frontier Town

“It’s a proper old-school mythological
story in the vein of the stories and fairy
tales that I grew up watching,” Howard says.
“It’s got that perfect way of telling you a
lovely, simple family story but also scaring
the bollocks out of you at the same time. I
think the show is right in that perfect sweet
spot of being a family show, but a show for
adolescents and kids, and a grown-
up’s guilty pleasure”.

The Outpost premieres on Syfy
UK on 13 August at 9pm.

MYTH MAKERS

The creators of The Outpost, Kynan Griffi n and Jason
Faller, talk about taking fantasy into new realms...

ON SWITCHING GENRES
G r i f fi n : We did a lot of short features
together at school and then in our last
year we said: ‘Oops what are we going
to do now?’ So, we spent a lot of our last
year putting together a business plan and
raising money to make our fi rst feature. I
think I graduated in April and in June we
rolled on our fi rst feature fi lm, which was
a romantic comedy.

Faller: We started out in comedy and
romance because it was where we thought
the market was and where we thought we
could get investment. We made a couple
of comedies and then we said: ‘You know
what, maybe we should make the stuff
that we like most. Could we make money
with that?’

ON WORKING TOGETHER
G r i f fi n : He is from Canada and I am
from South Africa but we both grew
up liking the same kind of fantasy and
science-fi ction stuff. We do a lot of the
same things but we also have our own
unique differences.

Faller: He keeps me grounded because I
tend to be highly optimistic about what
is possible, what can be done on what
time, and on what level of budget, and
he has a better sense of what’s really
going to happen.

G r i f fi n: I’m the dream squasher.

ON WHY THE OUTPOST IS AS
MUCH SCI-FI AS IT IS FANTASY
Faller: We don’t like made-up bullcrap.
It drives us crazy when it hasn’t been
grounded in some kind of a world picture
that fi ts within itself. When we allow
things to become unreal, we have to have
some pretty understood reasons deep
down for why that can happen. Although
The Outpost doesn’t take place in our
world, it does take place in our universe,
and we believe that the laws that apply
here need to apply there.

ON CASTING JESSICA GREEN
G r i f fi n : When we went into this series
we were really intent on fi nding fresh
and exciting talent and we cast from

all around the world. We really liked her
audition and when we asked for a stunt
reel from her, she put together a little
sword fi ghting demonstration with a
sword master over in Australia. We
were blown away by her ability to
do the action, how great she looked
performing the sword fi ghts and the
other action, and she really sold it.
She was the real deal.

ON NON-HUMAN RACES WE’LL
SEE IN THE OUTPOST
Faller: The Greyskins are a hulking, very
strong, very primitive race. They pre-date
the arrival of humans and were pushed
out of all the good land so they now live
in the wasteland.

G r i f fi n : They are very much creatures
of the Earth and when you see their
design you will see that they almost
look like clay. They are very earthy
and primitive. We wanted to create a
fantasy race that we hadn’t really seen
before to break away from the traditional
orcs and ogres.

The show pushes the
limits of the genre.
