THE

OF

T

he legendary Patek Philippe tagline “You never actu-
ally own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for
the next generation,” would probably work just as well
for any heritage brand that grants lineage and legacy,
a pride of place in its identity. Renowned jewellery
house, Kishandas & Co. is a manifest expression of that sentiment.
For a 148-year-old brand story that dates back four generations, it
is interesting to note that they only launched their flagship atelier
in Hyderabad as recently as December last year. Rooted in classi-
cism but theatrical in appeal, the jewellery shines forth with the best
of Hyderabad, whether in the elegant renditions of pearls or in the
craftsmanship of vintage designs. Another hallmark of their brand of
luxury is that none of their pieces are replicated; the design begins
with the gem and its rarity and so offering two of a kind is just as rare
as their collection, they claim.
With the finest grade gems set in delightful combinations of
gold, polki and pearls in traditional designs, each piece is a col-
lectible and makes the cut for a prized heirloom. It’s no wonder
that the brand boasts generations of loyal clients that continue
to patronise their ‘one-of-a-kind’ jewels. From a roster that once
included royals and members of the Nizam of Hyderabad’s court,
the family prides itself in forging ties, whether it’s with their cus-
tomers or tradition. For this photoshoot for India Today Spice, four
remarkable women—author and art and textiles curator Anju Pod-
dar, kuchipudi dancer Yamini Reddy, fashion designer Anushree
Reddy and the Begum of Bhopal’s grand daughter-in-law San-
geeta Jung—share why this particular brand of beauty has stood
the test of time and what accounts for their generational appeal.

FASHION DESIGNER

I remember my grandmother and
then my mother buying jewellery
from here; it is their timeless jewellery
that has made me a loyal customer
as well. Despite being traditional, I
can still still wear my grandmother’s
jewellery; it’s the same with Kishan-
das as well, as you can wear and pass
on their creations. I love their satla-
das (mulit-layered necklaces).
