change the house into a country house,” Robinson
explains.“Ididn’tdoanythingstructural,but
Ibroughttheoutsidein.Naturemadewhat’s
outsideandIcan’timproveonit;Ithinkit’sjust
beautiful. Even when the rain pours, it still looks
beautiful. It’s fantastic, like art.”
Buildingfromafoundationofconcrete,steel,
andrecycledwood,Robinsonsetaboutmakinghis
mark on the interiors, assembling appointments and
accessoriescollectedalongthejourneyofhislifeto
createwhathecallsan“industrial-country”aesthetic.
“I’vegotsomanyitemsinmyhome.It’svery
eclectic from all the years I’ve spent travelling all
overtheworld;everythingholdsmemories,”says
Robinson.“Personally,Iliketolivewiththingsandbe
surrounded by my life. Each item has borne witness
to my experiences, and I believe that when you walk
in,itlookswarmandfriendly.Ithasapersonalityof
itsown,it’sahousetobelivedin.”
Indeed, from the moment you enter, there
is a sense of warmth and hospitality. Robinson’s
fourdogs—threeofwhicharerescueswhilethe
fourth,aJackRussellnamedLuca,wasbestowed
onhimbyaclientandcamewrappedinaHermès
blanket—padabouttheplace,clearlyathomein
theirenvirons.Theeyeisdrawnfromobjets trouvés
tostrikingartworks,manyofwhichwerepaintedby
Robinsonhimself,andfromstunninglightfixtures
to commanding items of furniture.
Thezincdiningtable,idealfordecadentdinner
parties,isfromLondonandsitsonabaseconstructed
from old steel once used to build the Eiffel Tower.
Acoffeetableis,uponcloserinspection,antique
railwaysleepersfromIndonesiaencasedinclear
acrylic.Therearemyriadfleamarkettreasures,an
ornategiltandvelvetarmchairpurchasedfrom
a gentleman’s club in Paris, and napkins galore.
Robinson tells us, perhaps only slightly exaggerating,“I’VE GOT SO MANY ITEMS
IN MY HOME. IT’S VERY

THE WORLD; EVERYTHING
