The editorial team thanks Neil Schmid who rescued us with many
hours of help finalizing the bibliography. Mary Ellis Gibson contrib-
uted by reading the bibliography, and she helped us sort out numerous
bibliographic quandries. We benefited from two superb copy editors,
Natalie Quli and Marianne Dresser, who were able to bring order
to the disorder of forty scholars’ work. Cynthia Col did a wonderful
job preparing the index, and Sarah Krive kindly checked the Russian.
Li Xuan provided help tracking down missing page ranges.
Henrik Sørensen, Richard Payne and I agree that a special thanks is
due to all of those involved in the various projects that have been digi-
tizing Asian, and particularly Buddhist, resources. Especially impor-
tant in this regard have been the efforts of Lewis Lancaster, Charles
Muller, and the editors of the Chinese Buddhist Electronic Text Asso-
ciation (CBETA).
Forty scholars took time from other projects to contribute to this
volume. It has been a wonder to see how deeply enmeshed all of us
are in ordinary life. Over the course of this project, dissertations have
been completed, marriages entered into, babies born, moves from one
institution—or country—to another, parents have fallen ill or passed
away. Through all of this and more the contributors have continued
to work toward completion of this common project. Our thanks to
each of them.
Finally, I express thanks to Mary Ellis Gibson and to Emily Orzech
for putting up with this obsession for the last few years.
