practice was indeed very common, even among important monks of
the large state temples, who dedicated vast amounts of their time to
these activities. Perhaps the most renowned is Gomyō, who is said
to have spent his days in Yoshino and his nights at his home temple
(Sonoda 1970, 57).^7


(^7) Here again the Sanron, Hossō, and Avataṃsaka were the predominating schools.
This should be no surprise, since these schools were the most keen on “applied” Bud-
dhism and esoteric teachings.
