pretations can, but without taking on the substantial linguistic problems


of these views. although our analysis must remain tentative, awaiting fur-


ther investigation (esp. comparison of single author style-shift [and the


associated linguistic features] within ancient greek corpora), the levels


of variation within the features traditionally used to gauge Pauline style


seem consistent with what we know about single author style-shift in


response to variation in a single register variable (e.g., from +group to


+individual). With Paul, we are necessarily measuring possible response


to a complex of variables, in addition to genre, that we cannot isolate from


one another.
