MUSCAT MOUSE-TAILED BAT Rhinopoma muscatellum

Identification This is one of three very similar bats in the region: two
have a wide distribution, but this species is known only from Iran,
Oman and the UAE. It is easy to identify by its long, mouse-like tail
that projects well beyond the membrane. A membrane connects the
ears across the forehead.

Size Wingspan 30 cm.

Habitat and Behaviour These bats are mainly cave dwellers, but
also make use of old, dark and abandoned buildings. They form small
colonies, but individuals roost in a well-spaced manner, clinging to
rock walls. The main birth season appears to be July–August, but this
is not known for certain.

Distribution and Status This species is found in Iran, Oman and the
UAE.
