HORSESHOE BATS Rhinolophus spp.

Seven species of horseshoe bat are known in the region, and all are
similar in overall appearance and require detailed examination to
bring them to species level. They all have a distinctive horseshoe-
shaped main nose-leaf that is situated above the upper lip. Two skin
outgrowths (the sella and lancet) are also located on the face. The
outer edge of the tail membrane is more or less squared-off and not
pointed towards the tip.
One or more species of horseshoe bat occurs in virtually all parts
of the region. One of the most widespread is Cretzschmar’s, Bokhara
or Geoffroy’s Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus clivosus), which roosts in
caves, mine shafts and old buildings.
