by one adult male. They are territorial, range over relatively small
areas and the males mark their territories. Both sexes stamp their feet
and emit sharp nasal whistles when alarmed. Tahr are amazingly agile
in even the steepest terrain.

Distribution and Status The Tahr is restricted to the northern Hajar
mountains of Oman, to (remnant populations) Jebel Haffit, Abu Dhabi,
UAE, and to the Shimaliyah range in the north-east of the UAE. It
receives little active protection in the UAE, but is protected in the
Omani range. There are perhaps 2,000 surviving Tahr in Oman and
possibly fewer than 50 in the UAE.

Conservation Areas Wadi Sarin-Jabal Aswad, Wadi ‘Asya, Jabal
Nakhl, Al Hamya, Jabal Bani Jabr (Oman).
