Distribution and Status Populations are present in and adjacent to
the Atlas ranges of north-west Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia), Israel
and Palestine, possibly Syria and Iraq, and wherever there is suitable
habitat in Turkey and Iran. In Iran, major populations occur in the
forests of the Zagros and Alborz ranges. Their best protection in the
region is religious strictures laid down against eating pork.
